Consistent watering is the most important factor in keeping your bamboo or evergreen hedge healthy โ especially during the first year after planting. This guide explains how and when to water, depending on whether your plant is in the ground or in a container.
๐ฑ Watering Newly Planted Shrubs and Bamboo (In the Ground)
๐น How Often to Water
- First 3 months: Water 2โ3 times a week, more in hot weather
- After establishment: Water during dry spells (once every 7โ10 days is usually enough)
- Avoid letting the soil dry out more than 2โ3 inches down
๐น Best Time to Water
- Morning is ideal โ less evaporation, more uptake
- Evening is OK, but avoid soaking the foliage to prevent mildew
๐น Tips
- Water deeply, not lightly โ aim to soak the root zone
- Use mulch to help retain moisture and reduce weeds
- Avoid watering every day unless conditions are extremely hot and dry
๐ชด Watering Bamboo & Hedges in Containers
Plants in containers need much more frequent watering than those in the ground.
๐น How Often to Water
- Spring/Autumn: 2โ3 times per week
- Summer: Often daily in warm weather, especially for bamboo
- Check the top 5โ10 cm of soil โ if dry, it’s time to water
๐น Key Considerations
- Use larger containers to reduce how often you need to water
- Ensure good drainage holes to avoid root rot
- Terracotta pots dry out faster โ consider plastic, metal, or wood
๐ฆ All our bamboo orders include a slow-release fertiliser โ but even with this, consistent moisture is essential.
