✂️ Pruning Guide: Bamboo & Evergreen Hedges
Proper pruning keeps your plants healthy, encourages new growth, and helps maintain the shape and size you want — whether you’re growing bamboo or evergreen shrubs like Photinia or Laurel.
🎍 Bamboo Pruning
Bamboo behaves differently from other plants — once a cane is cut, it won’t grow any taller. It will retain its leaves, but its final height is set the moment it’s pruned.
🔹 When to Prune Bamboo
- New canes emerge in late spring and grow quickly.
- Wait until the canes have hardened and the leaves have unfurled before pruning.
- Prune just above a branch node for a clean finish.
Tip: If canes are too tall to reach, bamboo is flexible — you can gently bend the cane over to prune.
🔹 Bamboo Height Over Time
As bamboo matures:
- Cane height and thickness increase each year
- In the UK, expect 50cm+ of vertical growth per year
- Older, thinner canes can be removed to make room for newer, stronger growth
🌿 Evergreen Hedge Pruning (Photinia, Laurel, Elaeagnus)
Evergreen shrubs respond well to regular pruning — in fact, it encourages denser, bushier growth and helps maintain a neat, formal shape.
🔹 General Evergreen Pruning Tips
- Start pruning in the second year after planting — once the plant is established
- Use sharp, clean secateurs or shears
- Always prune just above a leaf node or bud where new growth will emerge
🔹 When to Prune
- Photinia Red Robin: Prune in late spring or summer after the red flush fades — this encourages more colourful new growth.
- Cherry & Portuguese Laurel: Trim in late spring to midsummer to shape and reduce size. Avoid cutting during hot, dry spells.
- Elaeagnus: Light trimming in spring or autumn is usually all that’s needed.
🔹 Rejuvenation & Thickening
- For sparse hedges, cut back harder in late winter or early spring to encourage fuller regrowth.
- Trim the sides more than the top to keep a wider base — this helps light reach lower branches and prevents legginess.
🌱 Final Notes
- Avoid pruning during frosty conditions or extreme heat.
- Always remove dead or damaged branches at any time of year.
- After pruning, give your plants a feed and a good soak to support recovery and stimulate fresh growth.
